Prof. Dr. Gautam Chattopadhyay graduated from Medical College Calcutta in the year 1980.

He worked as a House Surgeon in the Department of Surgery in Medical College Hospital (1981-82) and as a Resident during his Master of Surgery training in Calcutta National Medical College Hospital (1983-85).

He obtained his Master of Surgery (M.S) degree from the University of Calcutta in the year 1985.

Later on Prof. Chattopadhyay became a fellow of the Royal college of Surgeons (F.R.C.S) of Edinburgh UK.

He was awarded Commonwealth Scholarship by the Association of Commonwealth Universities UK in 1989.

He worked in the field of Surgical Gastroenterology in the University Dept. of Surgery in Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham as a Registrar and Research Fellow. During this time he had presented his research work to the British Society of Gastroenterology and to the Surgical Research Society in UK.

Prof. Chattopadhyay has published his research papers and original articles on Gastrointestinal and colorectal Surgery in Gut, British J. of Surgery, Digestive Surgery and European Journal of Gastroenterology while he was working in Birmingham.

On coming back to India he started his career as a Consultant Surgeon and Lecturer of Surgical Gastroenterology in Medical College Calcutta. He had established the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology in Medical College for the first time in West bengal.

Subsequently Prof Chattopadhyay became the Professor and Head of the Dept. of Surgical Gastroenterology in 2008. In 2014 he was appointed Prof. and Head of the Dept. of Surgical Gastroenterology in the Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research Kolkata (PG hospital). In 2016 he was appointed Professor and Head of the Dept. of Surgical Gastroenterology in Medical College Calcutta.

Prof Chattopadhyay has presented his research work to the Indian Society of Gastroenterology, Association of surgeons of India, Association of Surgical gastroenterology and has to his credit a number of publications in Tropical gastropenterology, Indian Journal of Surgery.
